I did a solo 6 day trek on the Machame route with Kefas and 5 other porters/chef. I arrived to Arusha 2 days before my climb and was told Kefas would meet me at the hotel the night before to do a quick debrief. We met the night before where he guided me through what I should expect for the trek. We went over a verbal itinerary of pick up times, drive times, trek schedules and overall timing. He was very responsive to my ad-hoc needs (like riding in the front to minimize motion sickness) and any other dietary constraints for my pre-climb lunch. I asked tons of questions regarding acclimatization (diamox doses), daily mileage, camping situation and meals. He had an answer for everything and prepped me for what I could expect on a daily basis. He was also very cautious about what I had packed to ensure I had the right gear (everything from boots to warm gloves) and asked about the material of everything to make sure it fit the mountain weather. I also showed him my dufflebag so he could comment on the weight and ensure it would be fine for the porters to carry.

I have to say the trip went flawlessly thanks to Kefas execution as a guide and the team lead. Although hiking is not new to me, I have never hiked with a team of people nor have a high pre-disposition for altitudes. I had may concerns about how my body would react to the climb, the medication, the food I ate, etc. We talked every evening to make sure I was prepared for the next day, knew the schedule and could answer any questions I had. During the trek I would be clear to voice out any aches so he knew when to move slower, drink more water or even take more medication if the situation called for it. Besides the climb talk, he was very social and kept me entertained by asking about my life and the things I loved. It made the trip less lonely and allowed me to connect and learn more about life in Tanzania.

Regarding his leadership skills, he was really good in educating his team and making sure everyone was on track. We were often the first group to leave camp in the morning, so the porters were always super quick to pack up and pass us on trail so they could have the tent and meals ready to go upon our arrival. They had to be up very early to ensure I ate and had water before starting of our days and they staid up late to make sure dinner was ready and any other needs were being met. I loved learning about the porters and engaging with them so Kefas ensured he could translate wherever needed or just start conversation to bridge the communication or culture gap between us.

I really appreciated the support, praise and encouragement when I was at my most tired during the trek. Again, altitude is not easy on my body, so the summit push was hard at times. I am very happy I had such an experienced guide there to ensure my health was on point and that my mentality kept positive (and excited) to celebrate the successes. He also took tons of pictures along the way, which helped me keep good memories of my trip (since I am not big on taking selfies and its hard to ask others to take your picture).

Very memorable trip. Thanks so much Kefas for making it so.

Kefas was the guide for 5 of us when we did our 7-day climb with TK in late September 2015. He and his team were very professional and helpful, in guiding us and providing all necessary support; we were taken good care and adjusted very well in the mountains to ensure a successful climb. Mutual trust between guides and climbers is vital and needless to say, the importance to keep the climbers informed and motivated. Kefas did fantastic job communicating with us what were going to happen and what should be expected every day. Apart from this, he kept on encouraging us to push our limit. I had some ankle injury right before the climb so Kefas and his team took special care of that, checking on my situation regularly, supplying hot water every night for pain relief and treatment, and suggesting alternatives for summiting day plan (eventually we did not take the alternative plan but Kefas respected our decision and supported it in all his capacity). Summiting Kili would not have been possible, without the support from Kefas and his team. We totally enjoyed our time in the mountains with Kefas and his team and would definitely recommend them to anyone considering climbing Kili.

Kefas was my guide for a trek which began in early August. I had a fantastic week on the mountain and thoroughly enjoyed my climb. Kefas is an excellent guide who has spent many years on the mountain and therefore knows the route well. Kefas and his team did an excellent job of looking after me on the mountain by making sure I was well fed and looked after! Team Kilimanjaro is an excellent company that really puts safety first when climbing the mountain.

Throughout the duration of my climb Kefas made the effort to update the blog on the TK website everyday, this was really useful for my friends and family to see my progress back home.

Reaching the summit is a feeling that is hard to describe but it was definitely worth the hard work! Kefas and his team are an asset to Team Kilimanjaro and I would certainly recommend them to anyone considering doing the climb.

Team Kilimanjaro

On 8th to 14th September my son and daughter, Michael and Kate McLean, and a friend, Terence McNamee, completed a Kilimanjaro climb via the TK Rongai route.
Although we booked through Henry Stedman, I thought I would provide you with direct feedback that I have received from our three climbers.

Overall they were mightily impressed. Of course the climb itself was considered exceptional but what overwhelmed them was the efficiency and organisation of the trek itself. As one of them put it “I cannot imagine any company anywhere in the world running a better trek”.
They said there was little to find fault with – tents were newer and more spacious than expected, food was both plentiful and tasty (Kate is still trying to sort out how the cook, Ezekiel, was able to produce a quiche for dinner on the fifth night) and the hot popcorn for afternoon tea was right on the money. Staff were very helpful and the concept of a wake-up call accompanied by tea or coffee while still in your sleeping bag was totally unexpected. The only minor mishap was that the toilet tent did not arrive until the last night but this was at most a minor inconvenience.

The trek leaders, Kefas and Macs, were seen as great leaders, They controlled the pace from Day 1 and set down the rules. They were highly impressed with Kefas – he ran a great trek. He is a proud Massai and is a great ambassador for TK of whom he spoke highly. From an early stage he made clear to the trekkers that they had to reach the summit under their own steam but that if needed they would be given some assistance on the way down – this seemed to fit well with what I understand is TK’s policy of “Safety before Summit”. My daughter said that it was almost distressing to see climbers with other companies being carried or dragged towards the summit. Hopefully TK will always maintain its current policy. Kefas encouraged them on the summit climb and checked regularly to see how they were faring – under his guidance they all made the summit. As for Macs, the trekkers all commented that Macs seemed to know everyone!!

From someone who was following their progress, the blog is a fantastic tool. Kefas sent updates up to four times a day which allowed me in Arusha and my wife back in Sydney to keep up to date on their progress on the mountain – what a great service, especially as Kefas kept up a constant flow of updates.

Finally I would like to thank TK for allowing me to travel out to Rongai Gate at the start and to Marangu Gate to meet them at the end of the trip – it slightly offset my bitter disappointment at not being able to undertake the climb itself.
So Congratulations to TK and Kefas and his team for a trek that exceeded all their expectations by a considerable margin. Please pass on my thanks to Kefas for looking after my kids so well!!

If I know anyone who is considering the climb, I will not hesitate to recommend TK (and Henry Stedman).

All the very best.
Don McLean.
