Frank John Gebra | Junior Guide Team Kilimanjaro
Travel Guides

My girlfriend and I had the great fortune of climbing Kilimanjaro through the TK Rongai route with Franck John from 24 to 31 August 2015. Frankie was simply awesome. If it were not because of Frankie and George Mauacha (the other guide, also exceptional) we would have not managed to reach the summit. I seriously mean it.
They arrived at the hotel to pick us up (5 minutes late that is why we have rated him with a 9, hehe!), reviewed the gear we had and, from then, take care of everything so that we could just relax, enjoy and focus on climbing.
During the whole week we spent together, Franck and George were extremely attentive to our needs, kind, approachable and funny (even laughing at my terrible jokes!), quite professional and respectful. They also taught us a lot, not only about the mountain and about climbing, but also about Tanzania, Kenya, swahili (Jambo mambo avarigane!), the different tribes of the country, the masais, the food, the religion, the animals, the plants and even the politics of the country! And they were eager to learn a few words of Spanish to joke with me. This attitude was very welcomed specially because we were climbing on a private climb, and there were no other climbers to talk to.
Attention to detail was simply spectacular. Constant reminders to drink water, questions about how we were feeling, briefings about what we were going to do everyday and explanations of the plants and the geography that surrounded us.
The service provided was so exceptional that we even were a little bit embarrassed. Hot water to wash ourselves in the morning and in the evening, a private chemical WC (probably not needed but welcomed!), a tent with two foldable chairs and a table (the chairs are a bless after so many hours walking!), pop corn waiting for us when we arrived in the afternoon, hot and delicious meals (Elisante and Julius master chefs!!!), pictures and reports every day to the office of Kilimanjaro Team... We were not expecting so much luxury and at the beginning we thought it might be excessive but... how grateful we were to have those little pleasures after a few days in the mountain!
During the last day of ascension to the summit, Franck, George and Athmani (another member of the crew) were essential. They helped us constantly, not only guiding us but also encouraging us to reach the top. At a certain point of time we were exhausted and they even took our day packs (which were like 5 kgs, nothing compare to the day pack they were carrying!!!) and climbed in front of us to literally lift us up to the top. And when we reached Gilman´s point Athmani gave us some hot tea. After 6 hours climbing it was literally a game changer.
When we came down, the whole crew was there to congratulate us singing a song. It was an amazing experience! After a week of climbing, we felt so close to them that we even felt sorry to leave them... :-(
For us, Franck, George and Team Kilimanjaro were simply the perfect choice. The technical route TK Rongai made the difference helping us by acclimatizing every day a little bit.
We have not rated certain skills of Franck that we did not see (like obedience to orders, he was the chief guide!!!), and we have given him a 10 on everything but punctuality (a 9, they arrived 5 minutes late and we did not want him to have a perfect score to tease him a little bit, ok Francky Ponchy?:-). Also, we have rated him a 10 in the category Frugal with resources in the sense that he managed to do everything that was needed with the little he has, but for sure they were not frugal with the food they gave us: I got a Kilimanjaro belly!!!
We also want to thank the whole team for the kindness and their constant smiles. Thank you Franck, George, Alisanti, Franck, Josephat, Athmani, Inocenti, Carlitos (what a singer and a dancer!), Tino, Danieli, Kassmu, Julius and Abdi. We would have not made it without you!!!
